About The chapel
Owned by Andrew and Lydia Turner, The Chapel is the culmination of a love of coffee, food and community. With the help of crowdsource funding from some amazing family and friends, and many late nights of renovating and restoration (also with family and friends), The Chapel sprung into existence in 2015.
What Makes Us Tick
We believe The Chapel is an extension of our lounge room; a beautiful space in which we can grow our family (our amazing staff!) and welcome more of our community to enjoy the good things in life.
The Chapel celebrates belonging, community and quality, and values local and global development by supporting City Mission and TEAR Australia.
The two photos on The Chapel’s walls represent our passion for both local and global development: The first is of our three boys; Zac, Jesse & Hamish - representing the next generation of our amazingly beautiful city. Credit for this photo (and for half of the paint on the walls) goes to Alex Grey. The second was taken during a life changing visit to Ethiopia and features a participant of a micro-loan provided through TEAR Aus. The lives of a mother and daughter changed by access to finance, advice and group savings.
Some History
This chapel was built in 1890 as a Wesleyan Methodist church.
In 1910, the hall was sold to the Salvation Army for $200.
The Salvos used it as their main citadel until 1956 and sometime later it became the home of the Country Women’s Association.
Many community groups hired it out while it was owned by the CWA including churches, dancing groups and Weight Watchers.
Before being converted into a cafe, it had a short life as a retail shop.
